The Palm Beach Branch of the English-Speaking Union invited all schools in Palm Beach County to enter our 2008 English Essay Contest for students in the 10th, 11th and 12th grades.
The winners received their awards at our annual meeting on April 18, 2008:
The Dorothy Wood Award for First Place ($500) was won by Miss Sarah Kleinman, of the Dreyfoos School, whose teacher was Mr. Richard Ehrlich.
The Second Place Prize ($300) was won by Miss Laura Stowe-Cooil of St. Andrew's School, whose teacher was Mrs. Judith Singer.
The Third Place Prize ($150) was won by Miss Carly Coleman of Spanish River H.S. whose teacher was Ms. B. Hoffman.
Additional awards were made to two tenth-grade winners, who were tied for First Place:
Mr. Tavner Murphy, of Jupiter High School for his essay "Nation of Dreams", whose teacher was Mrs. Cynthia Stowe, and
Miss Jessica Sweeb, also of Jupiter High School, and also taught by Mrs. Stowe, for her essay "Stars and Stripes; What Do They Really Mean?".
Mr. Murphy was also selected as our entrant in the U.S. National English-Speaking Union essay contest.

Each tenth-grade contestant also received a certificate of merit.

Competing students were asked to describe how their own experience as a high-school student relates to this year’s topic “What My Country Means to Me”, in an essay of five hundred words.
Teachers who would like their students to participate in next year's Essay Contest should get in touch with the Committee Chairman, to receive entry documents in due course:
