November 6, 2008 A complimentary tea was held at the Beach Club to welcome new members.
The event was well attended by new and current
members, and our programs for the year were outlined by the respective committee chairs.
November 10, 2008. An afternoon screening of a talk by an English author, Anne Sebba, entitled "American Jennie, The Life of
Lady Randolph Churchill" was given in the Parish Hall of Bethesda-by-the-Sea. The video had been produced by WGBH Boston, and was
originally given at the Boston Atheneum. A brief personal introduction was given by Capt. Robert Spencer, one of our members who is
a member of the Spencer family, (Winston Churchill's middle name was Spencer) and the presentation cast a most interesting light
on the conservative mores of the staid English Victorian aristocracy.
November 29, 2008. 70 members and guests attended a luncheon at the Colony Hotel and enjoyed a talk by Walter Ross entitled "Great
Scots, Great Castles". The presentation was illustrated with slides prepared by Curt DiCamillo from material provided by the National
Trust for Scotland. Mr. Ross' personal familiarity with the properties and their owners gave his talk added interest, and Mr. DiCamillo's
slides were up to his usual standard. Members will remember his talk last season on "English Country Houses" and we look forward to
his coming talk on "Jewelry". We were also fortunate to have as a guest Mr. Robert Lovie, Manager of Fyvie Castle, Scotland.

December 12, 2008. 65 members and guests attended a complimentary afternoon tea at the Beach Club to hear reports of their experiences
by the two teachers who had received scholarships to attend 2008 Summer Schools in the U.K. After the President's greeting the teachers
were introduced by the Chairman of our Scholarship Committee, Mr. John Farrell. Speaking first was Ms. Sue Vance, who gave a lively
and well-prepared account of her time at Edinburgh University. She was followed by Ms. Carly Gates, who had attended the courses at
Oxford. Ms. Gates read to us some lyrical poetry, which she had been inspired to write by her stay amidst Arnold's "Dreaming
Spires". To see her poems, and Mr. Farrell's introduction, with a brief video, follow the arrow below.
